Tisha B’Av: The Saddest Day of the Jewish Calendar

Tisha B'Av "the ninth of Av" is the annual fast day which commemorates the anniversary of a number of disasters in Jewish history, primarily the destruction of both temples in Jerusalem. It is regarded as the saddest day in the Jewish calendar.

Our tradition is to observe Tisha B’av as a community-wide event. Join Congregation Sinai, Congregation Beth David, Temple Emanu-El, Congregation Shir Hadash, and other members of the Silicon Valley Jewish community.

Tisha B’Av Evening: Saturday, August 2, 9:00 pm at Congregation Sinai. Evening services and reading Megillat Eichah (Book of Lamentations) by candlelight.

Other Tisha B’av programs:

  • Tisha B'Av Morning: Sunday, August 3, 9:00 am at Congregation Sinai. Shaharit services in the Sanctuary, including Megillat Eichah.

  • Tisha B'Av Afternoon: Sunday, August 3, 3:00 pm. at Congregation Beth David. Learning with Rabbi Josh Berkenwald of Congregation Sinai and Rabbi David Kunin of Congregation Beth David, followed by a minchah (afternoon) service, during which tallit and tefilin are worn.
